“The poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese”

Artist Biography

Pottery began as a hobby for me in 2000 It was just like making mud pies, but better! I immediately knew that this was something I wanted to pursue. As fate would have it, my husband took a 3-year job transfer to Michigan and I was able to continue my ceramic education at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester, Michigan, USA. Within the Ceramics Programming, I learned hand building and decorating techniques, tile making and throwing. I gained a better appreciation of clay and the boundless possibilities it presented. Critique and reflection were encouraged both in the classroom and during the open studio hours. They set high standards, “not expecting perfection, merely excellence”. During my time at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts, I had opportunity to participate in workshops, student exhibitions, Center sales and in the Rochester Arts and Apples Festival in 2003 and 2004 as a student exhibitor. Exhibitions at the Center exposed me to many fine artists and disciplines, providing a constant source of vision and creativity.
Blue Cheese Pottery was created in June of 2007.
I work primarily at cone 6 in stoneware and porcelain to produce functional wares, art tiles and cremation urns. I use both throwing and hand building techniques in my works. I use slips, under glazes and glazes (both commercial and handmade) to achieve the desired visual effects. Specialty custom tile work, murals and cremation urns are encouraged. I enjoy working on custom pieces where I can work with the client to generate a shared vision in clay.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is inspired by boundaries. Plant, animal or mineral is defined by them. Encased or held, to repel or fuse with other forms of life and matter; the dichotomy of the individual versus “les autres “, the “other”. From the macroscopic to microscopic, the world is delineated, yet connected in one harmonious entity. My work explores those edges of convergence and divergence, the transitions and flows; reflected in form, colour, texture or subject matter.
Workshops taken include: the Paint Creek Center for the Arts (Rochester, MI, USA), Fusion (The Ontario Clay & Glass Association), The Potters Council of the American Ceramic Society, NCECA (National Council for Education on the Ceramic Arts), Tucker’s Pottery Supplies, the Kawartha Potters Guild and the Northumberland Potters Association
